München blev grundlagt i 1158 og har været hovedstad i den tyske delstat Bayern siden 1225. I byens ældste kerne, Altstadt, kan man endnu se bygninger (Alter Hof, Residenz) fra middelalderen. Byens Ludwig-Maximilians-universitet (LMU) blev grundlagt i 1472. Idag har München to universiter: LMU og TU, det tekniske universitet.
Prag (Praha på tjekkisk) er hovedstaden i den historiske region Bøhmen (Cechý på tjekkisk), og siden 1993 i den nye stat Tjekkiet.
