대한민국(大韓民國, Republic of Korea)은 한반도 남부에 자리잡고 있는 나라이다. 북한에서는 남조선(南朝鮮)이라고 부른다. 제2차 세계 대전 후의 미국에 의한 한반도 점령을 계기로 1948년 8월 15일에 수립되었다. 정치 지리학상으로는 조선민주주의인민공화국(북한), 중화인민공화국, 일본, 중화민국과 함께 동아시아에 속한다. 국제 사회에서 조선민주주의인민공화국(DPR of Korea)과의 국가 명칭 "Korea" 혼동을 피하기 위하여, 흔히 대한민국을 남한(南韓, South Korea)이라 지칭해서 북한(北韓, North Korea)과 구분할 때가 많다.
인천광역시 (仁川廣域市)는 대한민국 중서부에 있는 광역시이다. 대한민국의 수도인 서울특별시, 경기도 충청남도 그리고 북한의 황해도와 닿아 있다. 인천국제공항이 있다.
평양직할시(平壤直轄市)는 조선민주주의인민공화국의 수도이자, 최대의 도시이다. 면적은 1000평방 킬로미터로 국토의 1%를 차지하며, 인구는 약 314만명이다(1999년).

성남시 (城南市)는 대한민국 경기도 중앙에 있는 시이다. 면적 141.
개성(開城)은 현재 조선민주주의인민공화국의 도시. 고려의 옛 수도로 500년간 번영하였다. 이전에는 경기도에 속하고 있었지만, 현재는 "개성공업지구"로서 "도"로부터 독립하고 있다. 한반도의 주요 도시안에서, 가장 판문점에 가까운 위치에 있다.
의정부시(議政府市)는 경기도의 시이다.

한국(韓國) 또는 조선(朝鮮)은 한민족의 나라를 어울러 이르는 말이다. 현재 대한민국(남한, 남조선)과 조선민주주의인민공화국(북조선, 북한)으로 분단되어 있는데 남한에서는 주로 ‘한국’이라 하고 북조선에서는 주로 ‘조선’이라 부른다. 이 글에서는 편의상 ‘한국’으로 용어를 통일한다.
